personality
We used to play pretend, give each other different names

Peter is a complicated person. He loves adventure and being outdoors. He’s a huge sports nut when it comes to Quidditch, even though his own broom skills are less than desireable. His three favorite people in the world have been his best mates since he was eleven. When he’s with James, Sirius, and Remus, Peter is content and happy.

Unfortunately, Peter has a dark side he can’t seem to shake. No matter how positive his day may be (and if it involves the Marauders, then his day couldn’t be better), it quickly sours the moment he’s left alone with his thoughts. Peter tends to over analyze every relationship or interaction he has, constantly reviewing the past days events and finding himself lacking. His self-esteem is practically non-existent. He generally covers up his morose thoughts by self-deprecating humor, which is pretty easy to hide behind considering his group of friends. He begins to doubt that anyone really enjoys his company and accepts that most of the time he’s tolerated at best and ignored at worst. He doesn’t think he’s very talented, nor does he feel he measures up in any way to his vastly more amazing friends. He is constantly comparing himself to James, Sirius, and Remus. It isn’t lost on him that most people view him as the odd man out, the one who doesn’t really fit. He’ll never be as popular as James, or as cool as Sirius, or as brilliant as Remus. When he was younger, it seemed natural to look up to his mates. As he grew older, he started to idolize them almost to the point of hero worship.

It wasn’t much of a problem at Hogwarts. He loved that they formed a tight knit clique, held together first by the secret of Remus’ little wolfy problem (as James put it) and then by the equally forbidden solution of becoming illegal animagus. For the first time in Peter’s life he felt special. As Peter sees it, it was James who primarily helped him with the difficult magic involved in the transformation. Sirius was helped, too, but without James’ more patient tutoring, Peter doesn’t think he would have managed it without horribly maiming himself in the process. Suddenly, James became far more important to Peter than ever. James Potter could do no wrong and the more time he spent around James, the more special Peter felt. Remus and Sirius were very important to him, too. As long as it was the four of them against the world, Peter could ignore his darker insecurities.

All of that changed when Lily came into the picture. She always was there, but Peter never felt threatened by her presence. As the boys grew older they naturally fell into the very popular topic of “girls”. Peter was the odd man out once again, never really taking a strong interest. He talked a good game and was secure in the fact that their boys club might discuss the odd encounter with the opposite sex but never find a serious relationship. The Marauders were stronger than any teenage fling. Girls would come and go but at the end of the day, it was the four of them - mischievous bachelors. By their last year at Hogwarts, Peter would fantasize about the four of them letting a flat together and living out their days as the Marauders. He ignored the fact that James and Lily were more than just a “fling”, or that the new laws surrounding werewolves made it highly unlikely that Remus would be able to live with them, or that Sirius was going through his own messy problems. It shouldn’t have surprised him that they all went their separate ways after Hogwarts - but it did. After seven years of constant friendship he was alone with himself. The dark thoughts he’d kept buried resurfaced and now he lacked any sort of distraction.

characters from this verse:

Before Hogwarts, Peter had a difficult childhood. His dad left his mum when he was four. She blamed Peter, reminding him that it was his lack of magical ability that caused him to leave. It didn’t matter that Peter’s first show of magic was when he levitated a mouse his mum was about to hit with a broom when he was eight. It was unimpressive, according to his mother. He found the mouse later in a trap his mum had set in the kitchen. She never explained why she didn’t clean the trap before he came into the kitchen that day. He suspected it was on purpose.

His mum wasn’t always cruel to him. She’d go through spells where she lavished attention on him, called Peter her darling boy. She introduced him to muggle music and books, even though they were taboo. It was a secret between them and he felt special for it. He was nervous when he received his letter to Hogwarts. His mum would make comments that didn’t makes sense to his eleven year old brain. She’d say he was going to leave her and never want to come home again (which was silly since he had to come home for holidays and such). Then she’d say that he wasn’t likely to make any friends, since all of the students at Hogwarts were so very talented and he was lacking. It was a relief when the Hogwarts Express arrived at King’s Cross and for the first time in his life he was able to bid his mum farewell. Of course, the moment the train doors slid shut behind him and he was faced with the prospect of meeting new people, a new sort of fear crept in.

The first year at Hogwarts was better than Peter could have ever hoped. He was sorted into Gryffindor and made friends with three of the boys in his year - James Potter, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin. His mum was right in one respect - he was not talented at magic. School work was difficult. Had it not been for his new mates help (especially Remus), Peter didn’t think he would have been able to pass any of his classes. Going home was difficult, but the prospect of returning to Hogwarts kept him going. Second year was better than first year. At the end of second year, Peter discovered a new secret - his best mate Remus Lupin was a werewolf. Only he, James, and Sirius knew about it. Their friendship was now cemented in forbidden knowledge and he swore to Remus he’d never reveal his secret. Of course, now he had a new goal in mind - formulated by the brilliant minds of James and Sirius. They’d help their friend Remus by becoming animals themselves. It was dangerous. It was exciting. Peter wasn’t sure how he was going to accomplish it. For all intents and purposes he was certain to kill himself but he didn’t care. No longer was he going to be the odd boy with far more interesting friends. He was a Marauder. Nothing could top how he felt the moment their friendship became a brotherhood.

Third and Fourth year were incredibly difficult. Learning the magic needed for the transformation drained him. It wasn’t unusual to find him in detention for having fallen asleep in another class. His mates grew frustrated at his slow progress and he was kept up at night by the haunting thought that tomorrow would be the day James, Sirius, and Remus would be done with him. He wouldn’t have been able to blame them. There were many times when he wanted to give up, declare the entire ordeal was impossible for him. Yet every month he’d see Remus after the full moon and knew that he couldn’t give up on his friend - his brother. True, Remus certainly didn’t want Peter to kill himself (and there were a few times when Peter came close), but Peter was determined. Plus, a part of him wanted to prove that he could do it. He’d day dream about which animal he’d eventually transform into. Maybe something amazing - like a hawk or a bear. A strong, powerful animal that would be able to take on a werewolf should they get into any danger. He ignored any suggestion that he’d turn into something ridiculous, like a goat or a goldfish. No, he knew that when the transformation happened it would be… perfect.

The night of the final transformation came during Peter’s Fifth Year. He was nervous, but James had taken the time to help him gain the confidence that all would be well. When he transformed it took him a bit to realize what he was. James was a beautiful stag. Sirius became a large black dog. Peter was much smaller and closer to the ground. His nose twitched and his thoughts were muddled as everything was much simpler and single focused. It wasn’t until he was back into his boy form that he realized he wasn’t a bear or a hawk - but a rat. A common brown rat. He didn’t let it show how much it crushed him. Instead, he joined in the celebration. He was now Wormtail, an important member of the Marauders. He never told them he fell asleep biting back hot, stinging tears of disappointment.

He grew to enjoy his time as Wormtail. His small size made it easy to get past the Whomping Willow and into the Shrieking Shack. Full Moon nights were the most exciting and wild moments of his life. With his Marauder brothers, they explored every inch of Hogwarts and combined their wonderful discoveries into an ingenious magical creation - The Marauders Map. As Fifth Year ended and Sixth Year began, Peter couldn’t imagine anything ruining their perfect adventure.

And then Snivellus had to stick his nose where it didn’t belong. Sirius nearly ruined it for all of them by pulling the wrong prank on the wrong person. Peter sat at the edges, watching his reason for being - the Marauders - nearly tear themselves apart. His nightmares now had him straining to keep James, Sirius, and Remus from disappearing. He depended on them far too much to let them break their friendship up. He tried everything - pleading Prongs, Padfoot, and Moony individually to keep the Marauders going. Peter never knew what it was that allowed Remus to forgive them, but he thanked Merlin they’d made it through. They’d been forged through fire and they were still the Marauders. Nothing could tear them apart now.

Seventh Year - the last at Hogwarts. Peter was barely scraping by in his classes, but he didn’t care. He had little academic ambition. He had everything he could ever want - friends he would give his life for and adventure every day. Even though they would be graduating come spring, Peter wasn’t worried. He was sure they’d all find a flat somewhere and continue being the Marauders only outside of the castle. He hadn’t expected Lily to steal James’ heart. Or that the laws concerning werewolves were growing more strict. He didn’t know that Sirius had been disowned until far later than he should have. Peter was so caught up in his own fantasy - his own desires - that when graduation came he was shocked to find himself at home, alone with his mum. His friends had all made other plans and he’d been too busy with keeping things the same to bother finding out what his mates were doing. His mum told him he needed a job if he was going to live with her or else she’d kick him out. He scrambled to find anything that was available to him, which wasn’t all that much considering his blood status and his mediocre grades. The first time the Full Moon passed without transforming into Wormtail was the hardest. He felt lost and isolated. What was he without the Marauders? Peter was struggling to figure that out.

abilities
We used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing in our face

Peter’s one special ability is the fact he is a secret animagus. His animal form is that of a brown rat (his fur is the same color as his natural hair color). Outside of the animagus transformation, Peter is mostly average in his magic. Most people consider him rather dull and ordinary, unless you are one of his three best mates. He graduated Hogwarts with little magical achievement -- outside of the one major accomplishment that he can’t admit publicly.
